SEDA One-Day Event

Assuring Assessment: benchmarks and thresholds

7 December 1998, The Manchester Conference Centre

Aim of the event
Format and contributors
Programme
A summary of key issues discussed
Feedback from delegates
Questions / issues for the QAA

Aim of the event:

The ways in which we assess students have been strongly foregrounded in recent years. In particular we have started to ask ourselves searching questions about:

the levels of achievement we assess
comparability between students as well as between courses
what constitutes minimum levels of achievement for graduates
how standards are assured.

Format and contributors:

This one-day event, which combined a keynote address, a conversazione and practical workshop sessions, provided participants with opportunities to explore such issues and contribute to the current debates which are taking place nationally and internationally on benchmarks and threshold standards.

The day began with an opening keynote address from Dr Norman Jackson of the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, entitled Standards-Based Quality Assurance: assessment, benchmarks and threshold standards.

Further contributions were made by:

Dr Liz Beaty – Head of Learning Development, Coventry University
Alison Bone – Dept of Management Studies, University of Brighton
Sally Brown – Head of Quality Enhancement, University of Northumbria at Newcastle
Angela Glasner – PVC, University of Portsmouth
Dr Kristine Mason O’Connor – Head of Professional Development, Cheltenham and Gloucester College of HE
Freda Tallantyre – PVC, University of Derby
Professor David Warren Piper – Southampton Institute
